Rescuers discovered Athena trapped in a tree in Washington County, 20 feet above the ground, after the floodwaters subsided. Remarkably, she survived the ordeal without serious injuries.

“After retrieving the dog, who was happily removed from the tree, rescuers were able to feed her. She has been turned over to the local animal control for a hopeful reunion with her family,” the Kingsport Fire Department (KFD) said in a Facebook post on Thursday. “KFD personnel located a ladder and were able to climb into the tree.”

TJ Faulkner, Athena’s owner, had lost all hope after watching his house swept away by floodwaters along the Nola River. The family was forced to evacuate quickly. They were unable to save their pets as the water rose, they told NBC News on Saturday.

When they saw footage of Athena, they were filled with Joy. The family was reunited with their dog at the Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter.

Despite losing their home, the Faulkners are overjoyed to have Athena back and are grateful they have each other during these tough times.

Hurricane Helene, a deadly and devastating tropical cyclone, caused widespread destruction when it hit the Southeastern United States on September 26.
