Keeping Your Dogs Safe at Halloween

I'm sure there were a lot of dog-safe treats among all the decor and activities throughout the day. While Halloween is fun and a major holiday that people decorate for, it's important to keep your pet's safety in mind when it comes to candy and decorations that might be in our homes, since some can be very dangerous to our fur babies.

Annie-Mae Levy, a professional dog trainer at Woofz, a puppy and dog training app, shared this reminder, “Given the chance, many dogs will eat just about anything—and Halloween offers plenty of tempting treats: candles, decorations, costumes, and endless piles of candy. However, the wrong snack can turn a fun night into a frantic vet visit."

We all know that chocolate is a big no-no for dogs and can be very dangerous if ingested. Levy says about chocolate, "It's highly toxic to dogs as it contains theobromine and caffeine, even small amounts of chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, seizures, and, in severe cases, death." Another dangerous candy is anything that is labeled sugar-free, "Many sugar-free treats contain xylitol — a nightmare ingredient for dog owners. Ingesting even a small amount can cause your pet’s blood sugar levels to drop rapidly, leading to lethargy, instability, seizures, and even death." She stresses explaining the dangers to children to ensure they don't give any candy to their furry friends.

Decorations can be a problem, too. Decorative corn may look like a tasty treat to your pooch but can be a choking hazard. Scented candles can draw a curious pup to check it out which could lead to a burn or fire hazard, so keep them up and out of their reach.

Levy also pointed out that fake spiderwebs can be harmful, "Fake spider webs might make your skin crawl, but many pets will have no qualms about getting tangled in and eating them. Artificial fibers aren’t easily digested, so intestinal blockages are a real worry. If your furry friend is too fearless for their own good, stick to paper decorations that won’t put them in harm’s way." Glowsticks are also a hazard to keep out of your pets' reach, "While generally non-toxic, chewing on one can still cause drooling, vomiting, and mouth and stomach irritation."

Halloween is such a fun holiday, and our kids all look forward to wearing Halloween costumes, trick-or-treating, and bringing home all of that candy! Just keep in mind that curious pets will get into things they shouldn't so let's do what we can to keep them safe.
