Snoop Dogg says his friendship with Martha Stewart is 'natural.' How it started

Martha Stewart is a creative force of nature. Then again, so is Snoop Dogg. So it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the hospitality maven and the rapper would have a lot in common — except, it kind of is!

Snoop Dogg says his friendship with Martha Stewart is 'natural.' How it started

Since 2008, when the pair bonded over making mashed potatoes on “The Martha Stewart Show,” we’ve been delighting in their celeb-friendship on social media, on reality TV, in books and beyond.

“When you work with someone like Snoop, it’s like having a sidekick,” Stewart told People in 2018. “That’s why all the comedians have sidekicks and bands because it loosens them up and lets them be freer. Snoop is my freedom.”

2008: Snoop and Martha Stewart meet over mashed potatoes

Snoop Dogg, known for his infectious personality, rapping career and love of marijuana, seemed like an unexpected guest to appear on “The Martha Stewart Show” in 2008.

But the pair immediately connected while making Stewart’s mother’s mashed potato recipe.

“What an odd couple we were,” Stewart said in a 2019 TODAY interview about that first meeting.

Snoop added, “Cooking with Martha just seemed like the right space to be in.”

And it was: Snoop returned the following year to make brownies, and the pair traded weed jokes (marijuana is a popular ingredient in “special” brownies) throughout the episode.

Then, in 2010, Snoop reached out on social media to Stewart, asking her for “goodies” to take to Prince William’s bachelor party:

“@marthastewart hi sunshine. need some goodies for Prince Williams bachelor party. i got the tracc #WET u get the snacks @clarencehouse,” he tweeted.

2015: Snoop and Martha roast Justin Bieber

Snoop and Stewart were invited to join the list of celebrities roasting Justin Bieber on Comedy Central.

Stewart also got in a few pokes at her pal on the show, noting, “Snoop, I see that you have been following my beauty regimen,” she said. “You would never know that Snoop Dogg is 43 now, which is three times as long as actual dogs live and twice as long as most of his friends.”

“She sat next to me and she stole the show,” Snoop said in the 2019 TODAY interview. “She was the funniest roaster that night. In that moment I knew I wanted to be alongside this lady for the rest of my life.”

2016: Martha and Snoop start cookin’ on TV

Eight years after they first started being pals, casting directors were finally taking note of their chemistry. They appeared on the “$100,000 Pyramid” as a celebrity team and raced through an early round of word association.

Later that year, they appeared together on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” playing “Never Have I Ever” with Anna Kendrick and the host. Through the game, they revealed they'd been sexted, used their fame to escape trouble, and visited a nude beach (presumably not together).

Their own show, “Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party," ran on VH1 from 2016 to 2020 (though the title added the word “Challenge” in 2019).

“I’ve never met anyone like Martha Stewart,” Snoop said in a Rolling Stone interview in 2016. “When we come together, it’s a natural combination of love, peace and harmony.”

2018-2020: From cooks to books and back again

Snoop published his own cookbook in 2018, “From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen,” with Stewart writing the foreword.

She wrote, “Working with Snoop in the kitchen has been a remarkable experience for me. Not only has he taught me new lingo and cultural references, he surprised me with his unique cooking techniques and recipes.”

In 2020, the pair couldn’t hang out much together — but Stewart phoned him up while making her HGTV series “Martha Knows Best,” and explained how he could pot his tomato plant. “You have planted things before, Snoop,” she said. “I can tell.”

Later that year, the pair made Christmas cookies live on Zoom for an event sponsored by Salesforce. Stewart shared pictures of their cookies on her blog and talked about the baking date on Instagram.

2021-2022: Stewart and Dogg co-host the Puppy Bowl, and more collabs

In both 2021 and 2022, the pair worked together at the annual Puppy Bowl, an event held before the Super Bowl.

As co-hosts, they threw a tail-gate (get it?) party for the little furballs. Stewart was Team Ruff; Snoop was Team Fluff. The event was so pup-ular they returned the following year.

Meanwhile, the pair appeared together on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” playing the Best Friends Challenge. Fallon asked what alcoholic beverage Snoop thought would represent Stewart. He said “vodka,” but Stewart said she’d rather be a “Martha-rita.”

They also joined forces again to judge the Peacock Halloween food competition on Peacock, “Snoop and Martha’s Very Tasty Halloween.” Snoop showed up as Bat Dogg, and Stewart was a witch.

Snoop became Martha’s first guest on her new podcast, “The Martha Stewart Podcast” on iHeartRadio in 2022. As she told Business Insider, “When I go to a party, all people wanna know is how is Snoop Dogg?” said Stewart. “And he said, ‘You wanna know something, Martha? When I go to a party, everybody wants to know, ‘How’s Martha?’”

2023: Martha honors Snoop with a tattoo

Stewart and Snoop are still going strong.

They shared the screen in 2023 Skechers ads.

In hers, Stewart appeared to be getting a tattoo of Snoop’s face on her arm. She also tried to trick her fans into thinking it was a real inking by writing on Instagram, “Thanks for the amazing tattoo @scottcampbell. Forever linked in ink to my favorite @snoopdogg.”

She appeared in Snoop’s Skechers ad, too — admonishing him to take his feet off the desk in the Oval Office.

2024: Martha and Snoop head to the Olympics and celebrate her new book

They were spotted at the summer Paris Olympics, supporting Team USA, as she detailed in her blog.

In August, they headed off to Versailles to watch the dressage finales in matching outfits — while celebrating her 83rd birthday.

“I had a fantastic time at the Paris 2024 @olympics,” Stewart wrote on Instagram. “Worked with my friend @snoopdogg, toured the city of Paris, ate at delicious restaurants, and met lots of great people.”

In October, Stewart released “Martha: The Cookbook: 100 Favorite Recipes, with Lessons and Stories from My Kitchen.”

As she reported on her own page, the celebration for the book (which will launch on Nov. 12), was held at the New York City Food & Wine Festival with, of course, Snoop in attendance.

“I just told her how much I loved her,” Snoop said during a TODAY appearance that same month. “It was organic, it was from the heart.”
