LILLE, France — Team USAs incredible depth proved to be their defining feature as they secured a 103-86 victory over South Sudan, ensuring their place in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games.

This impressive depth, while presenting a challenge for the coaching staff to manage, is a significant asset as the team aims for a fifth consecutive gold medal. On Wednesday, this depth was the key to their victory, with the American bench contributing a staggering 66 points compared to South Sudan's 14.

Former NBA MVP Joel Embiid, who started the previous game, didn’t play this time, while Jayson Tatum, previously benched, moved into the starting lineup. This allowed Bam Adebayo to shine, scoring 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbing seven rebounds. Six American players scored in double figures, showcasing their balanced attack.

Coach Steve Kerr highlighted the team's wealth of talent: "We have an embarrassment of riches on this roster, that's the best way to put it... So the whole thing is, are we committed to the goal? That's it. That's it."

Kevin Durant, embracing his role off the bench, added 14 points, while Derrick White contributed 10 points, three steals, and a block, all key to the team's defensive strength. Durant’s entry off the bench six minutes into the game, with the score tied 10-10, marked a turning point, energizing the team and shifting the momentum.

Despite South Sudan’s athleticism and promising talent, they struggled to keep up with the relentless depth of the U.S. team. Nuni Omot and Bul Kuol led their efforts with 24 and 16 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough to counter the Americans' firepower.

The U.S. team, with contributions from players like Devin Booker, executed crucial runs that defined the game. A 23-4 run during the first and second quarters essentially secured their victory. Even when South Sudan reduced the lead to 10 points, the U.S. bench restored a comfortable margin.

As the game progressed, starters LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Booker, who together scored 30 points, ensured the lead remained secure.

Looking ahead, Coach Kerr announced that Embiid and Holiday would return to the starting lineup for the next game against Puerto Rico. He emphasized the team's focus and commitment, downplaying the drama often associated with lineup decisions.

"The NBA is so popular worldwide and the regular season is kind of a soap opera... But these guys are here to win a gold medal. They're pros. They're committed to each other," Kerr stated.

With their depth and strategic adjustments, Team USA is well-positioned for the upcoming challenges as they continue their quest for Olympic glory.
