INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts recently made a bold quarterback shift, benching rookie Anthony Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco, and Coach Shane Steichen says it’s all about winning now.

Richardson, the promising No. 4 overall draft pick from 2023, was initially disappointed but took the decision in stride. Meanwhile, 39-year-old Joe Flacco, a seasoned QB and former Super Bowl MVP, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to start, emphasizing the importance of keeping perspective.

In his announcement, Steichen explained, “It’s my duty to these 53 guys and this organization to win games. It was a tough call, but one I believe is in the best interest of our team. Right now, I feel Joe gives us the best chance to win. This doesn’t mean we’re giving up on Anthony by any stretch.”

The Colts, currently at 4-4, have been working to break their streak of quarterback instability. Drafting Richardson was intended as a long-term solution, but the young quarterback has struggled, with a 44.4% completion rate — the lowest in the league — and multiple turnovers. In contrast, Flacco’s seasoned experience and quick decision-making are seen as valuable assets for a team still in the playoff hunt.

A Difficult Season for Richardson

Richardson has faced ongoing performance and injury challenges since his NFL debut. In his most recent game, a crucial interception before halftime helped the Texans secure a 23-20 victory, which pushed Indy further down the AFC South standings. Additionally, Richardson briefly took himself out of the game, which led to some criticism. Reflecting on that decision, he admitted, “As a leader, I know I can’t just pull myself out like that, especially at key moments. It’s a learning experience.”

Flacco’s Leadership and Experience

For now, Flacco will take the reins, bringing his 17 years of NFL experience to the table. The veteran quarterback, who won last year’s AP Comeback Player of the Year, has already proven his value, leading the Colts to two wins in three games with a strong completion rate and seven touchdown passes.

“I’m excited,” Flacco shared. “Any time you get a chance to play in this league, it’s a blessing. I feel very fortunate to be here with this team, and I’m ready to get the job done.”

The Future for Richardson

Though the decision was unexpected, Richardson is using it as a growth opportunity. “As a competitor, it stings. But I’m using this moment to learn and grow from my mistakes,” he said.

Steichen assured reporters that the decision wasn’t based on Richardson’s actions last game but rather what’s best for the team moving forward. While Flacco now leads the Colts, the team remains hopeful that Richardson’s potential will shine through with time and guidance.
