Matthew Perry's mom says she felt a 'premonition' before 'Friends' actor's overdose death

Matthew Perry's family is speaking out together about his death on TV for the first time − and his mom is detailing a heartfelt moment before her son passed away.

The "Friends" actor's mom Suzanne Morrison, who is married to "Dateline" correspondent Keith Morrison, is getting candid in a Today show interview with Savannah Guthrie, which airs Monday on the one-year anniversary of his death.

"He came up to me and he said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now," Suzanne Morrison recalled Perry saying to her.

Perry, who was 54 at the time of his death, was found unresponsive and face-down in the "heated end" of his pool on Oct. 28, 2023. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office revealed in December of that year that Perry's cause of death was due to "the acute effects of ketamine."

Suzanne Morrison continued in the "Today" preview: "It was almost as though it was a premonition or something. I didn’t think about it at the time, but I thought, ‘How long has it been since we have had a conversation like that?’ It’s been years.”

She shared Perry with her ex-husband John Bennett Perry, their only child together. The Morrisons, who married in 1981 and share four children of their own, have since started The Matthew Perry Foundation to assist agencies and organizations that help people who are struggling with addiction and substance abuse.

The interview comes as San Diego-based Dr. Mark Chavez pleaded guilty earlier this month in Los Angeles to one count of conspiracy to distribute the dissociative anesthetic drug ketamine, which killed Perry. Five people, including Chavez, were criminally charged in connection with Perry's death in August.

Matthew Perry's family in August: 'We were and still are heartbroken'

On a March 13 episode of the "Today" show's "Making Space" podcast hosted by Hoda Kotb, Keith Morrison spoke about his stepson's death, saying the loss is "not easy, especially for his mom (Suzanne)."

"As other people have told me hundreds of times, it doesn't go away. It’s with you every day. It’s with you all the time and there’s some new aspect of it that assaults your brain," Morrison told Kotb.

Perry's family previously spoke out in a statement after prosecutors charged the five people in connection to the "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing" author's death.

“We were and still are heartbroken by Matthew’s death, but it has helped to know law enforcement has taken his case very seriously," a statement from the Morrison family shared with USA TODAY said.

The statement continued: "We look forward to justice taking its course and we’re grateful for the exceptional work of the multiple agencies whose agents investigated Matthew’s death. We’re hoping unscrupulous suppliers of dangerous drugs will get the message.”
