Texas Democrats Rally Behind Kamala Harris After Joe Biden Withdraws from 2024 Race
Washington, D.C. – Following President Joe Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race on Sunday, several Texas Democratic delegates have quickly rallied behind Vice President Kamala Harris to secure the party's nomination ahead of what could be the first contested political convention in decades.
Support for Harris
Prominent Texas delegates like Veronica Escobar and Joaquin Castro immediately declared their support for Harris. Representative Jasmine Crockett, a staunch Biden supporter who recently shifted her stance, has also endorsed Harris and urged her colleagues to do the same. Fort Worth Representative Marc Veasey, who had recently called for Biden to step aside, stated, "Harris is the person everyone is rallying behind. She is ready and fit for the job."
Calls for an Open Nomination Process
Despite Harris receiving strong backing from many delegates, some voices within the party are advocating for an open nomination process. Austin Representative Lloyd Doggett acknowledged Harris as the frontrunner with Biden's endorsement but stressed the need to consider all talented individuals for the nomination. Other delegates, such as Henry Cuellar from Laredo and Vicente Gonzalez from McAllen, praised Biden but stopped short of immediately endorsing Harris.
Current Situation
Biden's withdrawal follows increasing calls from Democratic lawmakers, donors, activists, and strategists who questioned the viability of his candidacy after a poor debate performance against Trump last week. While Harris has garnered significant support, she still faces the challenge of stepping out of Biden's shadow during his presidency.
The Democratic Party is set to hold its national convention from August 19 to 22 to decide on the official candidate for the upcoming presidential election (The Texas Tribune).
