Can Dogs Eat Pumpkins?

With Halloween around the corner, there is a higher chance than normal that your dog might come into contact with pumpkin. Unlike other seasonal treats, like candy, you shouldn't worry if your dog eats a little. In fact some people feed their dogs pumpkin as treats and it's even added to certain dog foods.

So your dog can eat pumpkin, that means you can just let them have at one, right? Not exactly. If you're feeding your dog fresh pumpkin, you do need to be mindful of which part of the gourd you're giving them. The stem and leaves of a pumpkin are prickly. They can really irritate your dog's mouth and throat if they eat them. Similarly, don't let your dogs eat the skin of a pumpkin, as that can cause choking or gut obstruction later on.

You can feed your dog canned pumpkin if it's plain. While pumpkin pie filling might be fine for humans, it's not good for dogs and should be avoided. If you really want to give your dog some pumpkin, talk to their vet first. They'll let you know about any risks associated with the treat.
