Saints Part Ways with Coach Dennis Allen After Seven Consecutive Losses, Appoint Darren Rizzi as Interim Coach

The New Orleans Saints have made the decision to terminate coach Dennis Allen following their latest defeat to the Carolina Panthers, marking their seventh consecutive loss—a sequence not seen since 1999.

In the wake of this decision, the team has elevated special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi to the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

A Tough Season for the Saints

The Saints’ season has been marred by a series of injuries which General Manager Mickey Loomis described as an "avalanche." Despite these challenges, Loomis noted that Allen never made excuses and consistently fought for the organization, making his dismissal a particularly difficult decision. With a current record of 2-7, the Saints are now facing the prospect of missing the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

Dennis Allen's Tenure and Contributions

Allen, who succeeded Sean Payton in 2022 after Payton's brief retirement, ends his tenure with an 18-25 record, having failed to secure a playoff berth. His time as head coach followed a successful stint as the Saints' defensive coordinator, during which he significantly bolstered the team's defensive capabilities. Under his leadership, the defense consistently ranked in the top 10 in the NFL.

Saints owner Gayle Benson expressed her difficulty with the decision, citing Allen’s long-term loyalty and professionalism. Despite maintaining a strong defensive lineup, Allen's teams struggled offensively, particularly in the late stages of close games.

Offensive Struggles and Injury Woes

This season, the Saints showed initial promise with a powerful offensive performance in the first two weeks under new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, scoring 91 points across two games. However, the offense has since struggled, exacerbated by injuries to key players including center Erik McCoy, quarterback Derek Carr, and top receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed.

The Path Forward

As interim coach, Darren Rizzi will take over a team that has demonstrated potential but has been unable to translate it into consistent performances. The recent loss to the Panthers, despite outgaining them in total yards, highlighted the challenges the team faces in finishing games.

Allen's Coaching Future

At 52, Allen has proven his skills as a defensive coordinator, but his overall record as a head coach stands at 26-53, including his previous tenure with the Oakland Raiders. This record casts doubt on his prospects for future head coaching opportunities.

As the Saints move forward under Rizzi’s stewardship, the organization and its fans will be keenly watching to see if this change in leadership can turn the season around and chart a course back to playoff contention.
