Simone Biles becomes most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast, leads Team USA to women's team gold
The U.S. gymnastics team reclaimed their golden status at the 2024 Olympics. In the women's team event, Simone Biles, alongside her teammates, brought home the gold medal for U.S. gymnastics for the first time since Rio 2016.
Dominant Performance in Paris
In the final of the women's team gymnastics event at Paris 2024, held in the early hours of July 31st (Vietnam time), the American female gymnasts performed exceptionally well, achieving a total score of 171.296. They outpaced Italy (165.494, second place) and Brazil (164.497, third place) to secure the gold.
This victory was highly emotional for the U.S. team, marking their first gold medal since the 2016 Olympics and reestablishing U.S. gymnastics as a powerhouse.
Simone Biles' Remarkable Comeback
For Simone Biles, this win marks an impressive return following her struggles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In Tokyo, Biles shocked the world by withdrawing from individual event finals due to "mental health reasons," despite being a strong contender for at least three gold medals. This decision significantly impacted U.S. gymnastics' performance at the 2020 Olympics.
Determined to make a comeback, Biles trained rigorously to compete in the 2024 Olympics. Her journey was not without challenges, as she entered the qualifiers with a left leg injury.
Outstanding Floor Routine
In the final, the 27-year-old gymnast delivered an outstanding floor routine, earning 14.666 points, the highest among all competitors in this segment. This score significantly contributed to the U.S. team's overall victory, solidifying their number one position in the women's team event.
This gold medal is Simone Biles' first at the 2024 Olympics, with more events to come as she aims to add to her medal tally. Biles has already amassed 38 career medals, eight of which are from the Olympics, making her the most decorated U.S. gymnast in Olympic history.
